Walk Prevents You from Eating a Dessert
Professor Adrian Taylor of the University of Exeter found out that moderate physical activity, such as a 15-minute walk, allows us to reduce up to 50% in the consumption of chocolate. For many of us snacks is the way of coping with stress or boredom at work. Strolling helps to overcome this habit.

This statement has been confirmed by an experiment: 78 people who regularly ate chocolate at work received a number of tasks. People who walked to work ate about 15 grams of chocolate. The people who were deprived of exercise ate 28 grams in average. The difference in the complexity of tasks did not affect the amount of the consumed chocolate.

Earlier, the professor and her colleagues had proved that exercise can reduce the craving for chocolate.

The conclusion is as follows: in order not to overeat sweets, try walking in the fresh air, and the desire to eat a dessert will disappear!

Women Need to Feel Labor Pain

Women Need to Feel Labor Pain
It might seem that if there is no pain, there is no problem. However, doctors insist that pain is necessary: it forces a woman to complete the process of birth – to strive to end it with the birth of a baby. If there is no pain, there is no desire to make an effort.
According to Doctor of obstetrics Dennis Walsh from the University of Nottingham, England, the pain during childbirth has its own advantages for both mother and baby. He emphasizes that painkillers, such as epidural, violate the natural process of psychological connection between the mother and the child.
Dr. Walsh says that labor pain often helps to regulate the time of delivery, reinforces psychological connection between the mother and the baby, and prepares the woman for motherhood responsibilities.
Over the past 20 years, the use of epidural anesthesia has doubled. In fact, it is used only on demand of women in labor, even despite the fact that the medicine increases medical risks during childbirth and despite the availability of alternative and less invasive ways to control pain symptoms.
Meanwhile, according to Dr. Walsh, the pain has positive physiological effects, allowing to set the rhythm for the contractions and activate the production of endorphins, the hormones that help to adapt to the feeling of pain.
The doctors have noted that the use of epidural anesthesia facilitates side effects, such as the need for hormone replacement therapy during labor and the use of forceps for the child to be born safely.
According to the research by Swedish doctors, one should not overuse these painkillers at least because of the fact that the risk of drug addiction among the adolescents, whose mothers received morphine drugs during labor, is five times higher.
The nervous system of the baby “remembers” the narcotic analgesic. And then, if one day the teenager gives it a try, there will develop a fast and strong addiction.
Dr. Walsh says that alternative methods of reducing pain are safer for both the mother and the newborn baby. For instance, he suggests using the technique of hypnosis, massage, yoga, and birthing pools.
It is believed that the woman, who is psychologically ready to deliver a baby, who is able to breathe properly, is well aware of all the phases of labor, who is able to control herself and is aimed at the result, can cope well without painkillers.

Children Eat Veggies

Children Eat Veggies
Why don’t our children like to eat vegetables? One of the reasons may be sensitivity to bitterness.
This phenomenon is quite common among children. For example, 70% of the kids, who participated in the study conducted by American scientists in the laboratory for the study of obesity, said that they would rather be drawn to an apple or a banana than eat lettuce or even less desirable Broccoli.
Dr. Jennifer Orlet Fisher, who led the study, says that the gene TAS2R38, which is responsible for the way we perceive the bitter taste, should be blamed for it.
What does the doctor recommend to the parents, whose children fail to eat useful vegetables? One should just reduce their taste with low-fat yogurt or buttermilk and add applesauce or hummus to the salad.
Cook delicious dishes – from the point of view of your children, – and then your kids will eat broccoli, lettuce, and other vegetables.

Weight Loss and Female Friendship

Weight Loss and Female Friendship
Psychologists believe that weight loss leads to a less close female conversation.
Do not rush to lose weight, if you do not want to lose pleasant chatting. According to the results of the survey, involving 10,000 female residents of the UK and commissioned by the manufacturers of weight loss products, rapid correction of the waist is dangerous for female friendship.
One-third of the interviewed women have sincerely admitted that they secretly envy their friends, who are losing weight. One in six respondents wants her friends to have extra weight. 20% of the survey participants feel happy when their best friends have more extra pounds than they do.
No matter how much we praise friendship and how often we talk about wishing only the best to our friends, human jealousy is often stronger than the relationship.
10% of the respondents tell their friends that they have lost weight. But it does not happen in reality. Do you think this is done in order to encourage the friends? No, these words are uttered to make them stop dieting. A significant amount of women aged 16-17 years mark their friends only in those general photographs on social networking sites where they look ugly.

Pregnancy Short Memory Syndrome

Pregnancy Short Memory Syndrome
You shouldn’t have smiled, seeing this headline. In fact, the mission of the pregnant woman‘s brain is the most noble one: it only remembers what it really needs at this period of the future mother’s life.
Laura Glynn, a psychologist from Chapman University in California, has held a number of studies that prove the idea that pregnant women do suffer from short-term memory loss, and the brain as if focuses on the needs of the child, while everything else is in the background.
Especially if it is not the first pregnancy, expectant mothers know that it is this temporary happy condition which makes them extremely forgetful. They can fail to remember what they have been doing, where they have put the car keys, what day of the week it is. But it does not matter, and neither the pregnant woman, nor the people around her should be scared by it. Be sure the “brain will get back in its place” exactly at the moment when the baby is born. One will need extreme concentration, good reaction and endurance, so the body is prepared in advance by accumulating energy.
Dr. Glynn explains that these changes make a woman absent-minded, forgetful and extremely sensitive. They can be caused by hormonal changes in her body, by the moving of the fetal cells into the mother’s bloodstream (the scientists believe that these cells are attracted to certain brain areas), and the movements of the fetus. And even if the child moves almost imperceptibly, any change in the position of its body increases the heart rate of the expecting mother. In addition, pregnancy is a critical period for the development of the central nervous system of the woman, but, unfortunately, the scientists do not know practically anything about it. The only thing we can say for sure is that all these components taken together affect the pregnant woman’s brain, making it so… “absent-minded”.

Foods Really Destroy Children’s Teeth

Foods Really Destroy Children’s Teeth
Some doctors believe that the real trouble for children’s teeth is caused not by chocolate and candies, but by “healthy” drinks instead – juices, fruit cocktails, and smoothies. The physicians believe the problem is that today’s children do not want to drink plain water – the most useful drink on the planet. They do not drink it even as they grow a little older. They do not have this culture, and their parents are guilty of it, since they offer their children juices, smoothies, cocoa and other sweetened natural substitutes from an early age, instead of giving their children the most natural liquid for a human being, plain water.
Britain’s leading dentist Catherine Hurley explains that fruit juices and cocktails, as a rule, are very acidic, and their pH levels range from two to three. And every time the environment in the mouth is more acidic than pH 5,5, the teeth get vulnerable to “acid attacks”. Parents, of course, understand that their child’s uncontrolled use of sweets can lead to tooth decay, but they do not know anything about acidity. Propaganda is certainly to be blamed for this, since it makes an emphasis on the harm of sweets, and juices are declared healthy drinks. According to Hurley, the most interesting thing is that the terrible picture of the “deterioration” of children’s teeth is observed more frequently in affluent families where parents do not spare money on healthy eating: fruit juices, smoothies, milkshakes…
So if Hurley’s message is heard, in the near future the manufacturers may be obliged to warn about the harm caused by fruit and sugary drinks, rather than tell about their health benefits. In the meantime, a good way is to offer your kids a straw if they are so fond of drinking juice instead of water. In addition, if the juice is drunk together with food, its negative impact on the teeth is greatly reduced. And this is the doctors’ second recommendation. It will also be good if you drink some plain water after juice, or rinse your mouth with water.

Popular Lipsticks Contain Dangerous Levels of Lead

Popular Lipsticks Contain Dangerous Levels of Lead

At least two popular lipstick brands have lead levels above the threshold considered safe (5 ppm) in personal care products in the state of California, according to FDA researchers.
Lead is a neurotoxin that is particularly dangerous for pregnant women.
In the FDA testing, the most-contaminated brand, Maybelline Color Sensation made by L'Oreal USA, had lead levels more than 275 times the level found in the least contaminated brands, and more than seven times higher than the average found in all the lipsticks.
The FDA researchers, who tested 400 brands of lipstick, have concluded that the problem is much more widespread among lipsticks sold to U.S. customers than the agency's previous research had found.
According to Jane Houlihan, senior VP for research at Environmental Working Group, "Millions of women get a little bit of toxic lead on their lips each day with every swipe of their lipstick"
"There is no safe level of lead exposure. The biggest concern is for pregnant women – lead is a potent neurotoxin and the fetus and very young children are most at risk. Some companies make lead-free lipsticks, and we think all companies should."
EWG has addressed a letter to Linda Katz, M.D., M.P.H., director of FDA's Office of Cosmetics and Colors, that reads, "Your new analysis found lead levels in lipstick more than twice as high as your previous report. As in previous studies, certain manufacturers consistently have higher lead levels than other brands... Clearly, some manufacturers could be doing more to protect women from unnecessary lead exposure."

Mother’s Age and Breast Cancer Risk in Daughter

Mother’s Age and Breast Cancer Risk in Daughter
A new study shows that with age, under certain conditions a girl can develop breast thickening, which is a serious risk factor for cancer. If a mother gives birth to a girl when she is over 39, and if before puberty the girl is taller and thinner than her peers, she has a high chance of getting breast cancer.
Virginia Loup, the author of the study, explains that it is associated with an increased content of hormones. The risk of cancer is also caused by the speed of a girl’s maturation. If breasts begin to grow too rapidly, the predisposition to cancer evolves, as well.
Medical Express reports that breast cancer remains a genetic condition, but other factors also have influence – for example, the age when a woman gives birth to her first child and the number of children.
The study is published in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.

Partner’s Snoring and Sleep Deprivation

Partner’s Snoring and Sleep Deprivation - Sharing a bed with a partner who tosses, fidgets and snores during the night makes one’s sweet sleep shorter by as much as 730 hours a year, a study commissioned by Lovetub informs us.
The partner of a man or woman who is in the habit of snoring and grunting in their sleep has to stay awake for the average time of two hours per night.
This loss comes up to 730 hours a year and 35,770 hours during the adult life span – meaning we lose out on nearly three and half years of shuteye.
It emerges from the 3,000 people poll that women’s sleep is oftenest disrupted by men’s snoring, whereas what ails men most is women’s tossing about the bed.
40% of the couples polled complained that their partner always tries to take over the whole bed, while 30% spoke of incessant struggles over the possession of the duvet.
Yet practically all of them are ready to put up with troubled sleep in order to maintain proper sex life which is strongly associated with sharing a bed.
The comment from Lovetub accentuated that sleeping in the same bed “isn’t all it’s cracked up to be” because sleeping together and sharing “those intimate moments” make up for the discomfort amply.

Language Learning Prolongs Youthfulness

Language Learning Prolongs Youthfulness - American scientists after their research have concluded that the knowledge of foreign languages prolongs youthfulness, the Science journal writes.
Curiously, this finding primarily concerns women. It turns out that if a woman knows at least two foreign languages, this helps her to longer preserve a clear mind and good memory to old age.
The research authors attribute this to the fact that women’s (polyglots’) brains are exposed to greater stress and consequently have an increased efficiency. In addition, the experts found that women who speak several languages can successfully carry out several things at once: for example, drive a car and talk on a cell phone.
As a primary illustration of their study, the researchers cited the example of residents of one of the districts of New Guinea, who have many foreign languages – from five to fifteen – their brain performance in old age on average corresponds to that of 30-35 year olds – the Science journal wrote.

Food Packages are Dangerous to Health

Food Packages are Dangerous to Health -  Researchers from the University of Toronto have discovered that food packages are the main source of a number of harmful chemical compounds such as toxic endocrine destructors and perfluorocarbon carboxylic acids.
Paper packets for sandwiches and french fries, foil for chips and other kinds of food packages contain a lot of chemicals that can cause health problems. Moreover, harmful substances are contained in many cloths such as bedding materials and carpets. Harmful chemicals were found in toys, utensils, powders and cosmetics. Toxic substances contaminate human blood and interfere with the work of his endocrine system, causing hormonal disruptions.
During the experiments, the researchers observed rodents that were exposed to substances present in food packages. The results showed that these compounds accumulate in the body and are not eliminated from it. The researchers caution: these chemicals can lead to problems such as deterioration of the immune system, increasing cholesterol levels, as well as causing failures in the thyroid gland. Unfortunately, it is yet unknown how to guard against this.

Pet Rabbits Beneficial to Woman’s Health

Pet Rabbits Beneficial to Woman’s Health - The trend of having rabbits as pets has been popular for quite a while now. Yet, only recently have specialists managed to prove that those animals are not just pretty but also good for our health. Now, the relatively new technique of having cells with bunnies present during consultation sessions with psychologists and psychotherapy is becoming increasingly popular.
The new study was conducted by a team of specialists from the University of Missouri and was led by Professor Rebecca Johnson. The results of the study show that even mere presence of bunnies gives women sense of calmness and tranquility. Furthermore, the scientists observed decrease in the level of stress hormone cortisol in the women’s bodies after they petted those fluffy animals for a few minutes.
Dr. Johnson notes that presence of a bunny in a household and the process of taking care of it facilitate social bonding, teach women and girls how to better understand themselves and others, and how to communicate with other people more effectively. In particular, women who had rabbits also had better control of their emotions and behavior. Bunnies used as part of therapy also facilitate healing of serious illnesses in children and adolescents, such as autism or depression, and help them cope with lack of confidence.
